Fresh out of high school, Joey briefly attended Detroit's College of arts and crafts and worked at McNamara Brothers art studios as mechanical illustrator where he drew Chrysler Corp. cars till 1968, then switched jobs to Hughes & Associates. In 1969 he won the Golden Bull award from The Society of illustrators. During this time Joey lived in a carriage house on east side of Detroit's Indian Village.
